SYNOPSIS

Fathers and Sons is the story of Arkady Kirsanov, a Russian man who returns home after graduating from St. Petersburg University, and his friend who accompanies him, Yevgeny Bazarov, a medical student with anti-traditionalist ideas.
Arkady and Bazarov spend some time at their father’s estate, where their uncle, Pavel Petrovic, with conservative ideas, and Fenecka, a young servant who has recently given birth to Nikolay Kirsanov’s second child, are also staying. When the situation becomes unbearable for Bazarov, the two friends decide to go to the city and, at a party, they meet a fascinating woman, Anna Sergeevna Odintsova, who instantly conquers the hearts and minds of both of them. At that point, the friendship between Arkady and Bazarov is put to the test and the feelings will turn their lives upside down forever.

REVIEW

What attracts the reader’s attention is undoubtedly the character of Bazarov. His presence, his way of speaking and acting, makes this simple story quite interesting. The ending surprises and makes one reflect on some important themes of the time that, seen from another perspective, are in some ways still current.
The author has chosen a third-person narrator who knows the thoughts of the most important characters in the story, and this decision allows the reader to follow their adventures in any places they are. The accurate physical and psychological descriptions of the characters and scenes encourage immersion in the reading and the vision of what is happening at any moment. Direct and indirect speech and stimulating dialogues. As for the theme, it is clearly evident from the very beginning and is well treated throughout the narration, and the time, even though sometimes it is not clear exactly how it goes, it is well balanced with the time of reading.
