1st of February, 1882 – 16th of January, 1967
On February 1st, Marie Majerová was born in a city in the Czech Republic. She was a writer, journalist and translator whose works, novels and newspaper articles explore social themes such as the life of workers in the mines (Stories from Hell and others stories); women’s oppression (Maidenhood). Her most important work was the novel The Siren, which masterfully describes the evolution of the industry of a city in the Czech Republic through a family history spanning several generations.
She was also the editor of a weekly magazine, a member of the Czechoslovak Communist Party and a translator of famous writers such as Victor Hugo, Gustave Flaubert and Honoré de Balzac. Some of her works, including The Siren, have been adapted to the big screen.
