October – Anna Brigadere

In this space, we pay homage to the women writers throughout the centuries, who have inspired throughout their lives and works, have shaped literature and given form to new visions of the world.
Each month of the year is dedicated to a woman writer born on the first day of that month, symbolically elected as a guide and inspiration for the following weeks.
Through a brief biography and reading suggestions chosen to delve deeper into the work of the writer of the month, the themes dear to her or the historical and cultural context in which she lived, we invite you to discover the female literary heritage and each month to listen to a different but equally powerful voice.

The month of October is dedicated to the Latvian writer and playwright Anna Brigadere
1st October 1861 – 25th June 1933

On October 1st, Anna Brigadere, a prominent writer and playwright whose works are considered pillars of her country’s narrative and theatrical tradition, was born in Latvia.
She wrote her first work, the story Slimnīcā, around 1893, but achieved enormous success in 1903 with the play Sprīdītis, written for the Latvian Theatre in Riga. Throughout her career, she wrote comedy and drama, poems and the autobiographical trilogy considered her masterpiece: Dievs. Daba. Darbs, Skarbos vējos e Akmens sprostā; a psychological portrait of the author’s childhood, filtered through the character of Annele, in a rich and deeply human prose. Her house in Latvia, which she called Sprīdīši, is now a museum dedicated to her.
